Traveling on a regular basis for a career that you love is the American dream. And, if traveling on the highways, seeing all the sites, maybe even meeting people from all over the country is appealing to you, consider a career in truck driving.
Being a truck driver can be more than just seeing the sites, it’s unlike any profession. Every day can be different, one day it can be the hardest job in the world, the next it can be the greatest job you’ve ever had. The lack of routine can be appealing to some people because it doesn’t become boring easily. If you enjoy a daily schedule and a predictable routine, truck driving may not be for you. Truck driving may not be for everyone, but there are a few characteristics that make a successful truck driver in the truck driving industry.
Characteristics of a Truck Driver
Although it’s very basic, driving is an essential requirement. If your mind wanders when you driving to the store or if you need to stop every hour, you might want to look at other careers.
Drug and alcohol free –
You are required to take pre-employment drug and alcohol tests along with random testing throughout your driving career. This means you must be drug free. CDL truck drivers have a legal alcohol limit of 0.04 – half of the regular limit. Any detectable trace of alcohol will leave you out of service for 24 hours.
There’s a lot of sitting and waiting involved in being a truck driver. Traffic, loading docks, truck stops, etc. Lack of patience can lead to serious problems, including road rage.
Being a truck driver means you’re out on the road with no boss to keep track of you. Hours can be long – anywhere from 12 to 14 hours a day, but you have to stay motivated and you must keep going.
Reasonable physical condition –
You don’t need to be a gym rat, just an average person. You’ll be climbing around the equipment and moving freight frequently so you’ll need to be in shape.
Alone time –
Being alone for hours at a time may seem intriguing to you, however, many people can’t stand being alone for very long. There is the option to have a team partner, but that isn’t for everyone either.
If you feel like you have the right characteristics to become a truck driver, it’s time for you to get your CDL and become a company driver. Without a CDL, the only truck you’ll be able to drive is a pizza delivery truck. When taking the CDL exam, you’ll have questions about vehicle inspection, how to see/anticipate hazards, skid control and recovery, communication with other drivers, driving at night, etc.
